Most people researching metal door prices run into the same problem: two quotes differ greatly and the reason is unclear. The cause is usually less the door than the content of the quote: which material, which surface protection, is the motor included, who installs. In this article we explain what sets the price of steel entrance, garden and garage doors and how to compare quotes.

Short answer: Metal door price is set by size, material, surface protection, design, motor/accessories and installation conditions. For a fair comparison these items must be written in the quote. A first idea comes from photos and approximate dimensions; the firm price comes from measuring on site.

We do not give figures here, because input costs change over time and every door is made to measure. The aim is to give you the framework you need to read prices correctly.

Main cost items by door type

Door type What affects price most To settle in the quote
Steel entrance door Leaf structure, lock system, finish, glazing, insulation Lock/cylinder, frame, finish type
Sliding garden gate Width, track system, side post, motor Track type, motor, floor slope solution
Swing (double-leaf) gate Leaf weight, hinges, post strength Are posts and foundation included?
Louvred gate/fence Number and thickness of slats, frame Slat spacing, does the paint reach between slats?
Laser-cut patterned gate Pattern density, sheet thickness, load-bearing frame Are the cut edges coated?
Pedestrian gate Lock and hinge quality, size Compatibility with door bell/lock

You can find the pros and cons of each door type in our metal door guide: Metal Doors in İzmir.

8 factors that set the price of a metal door

  1. Size: Material, weight and labour rise with width and height.
  2. Material: Painted steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel or aluminium each affect cost in a different direction.
  3. Surface protection: Galvanising + electrostatic powder coating costs more than a single coat of paint but suits İzmir’s climate far better.
  4. Design: A plain door is simplest; louvred, laser-cut or wrought-iron details increase labour.
  5. Motor and safety equipment: The motor, remote control, photocells, safety edge and power supply are separate items.
  6. Load-bearing system: Posts, foundation, track and hinges; the least visible but most critical part of a door.
  7. Installation conditions: Sloping ground, wall deviations, access difficulty and installation time all matter.
  8. Transport and VAT: The included/excluded items in quotes are the most common thing that spoils comparison.

Motorised gate: a separate cost item

On a motorised garden gate the cost is not just the motor:

  • Motor and control: A motor suited to the weight of the gate and how often it is used.
  • Safety equipment: Photocells, a safety edge and a warning lamp. For motorised gates, ask about equipment that complies with standards such as EN 12453 and EN 13241.
  • Power supply: A line may need to be run for the control and motor.
  • Manual release: A solution for opening the gate in a power cut should be planned.

Having the gate built motor-ready from the start lowers the cost of adding one later. Even if you do not plan a motor now, it is wise to say that you may want one in future.

Why do “the same door” quotes differ in price?

Quote item What may be seen in a lower-priced quote Why it matters
Profile and sheet thickness Thinner material The door sags or bends over time
Surface preparation Limited blasting/cleaning Paint blisters early
Paint system No primer, single coat Rust starts quickly
Edges and welds Uncoated edges/seams Rust starts there
Posts and foundation Not included or weak Leaves sag and scrape
Motor/safety Basic motor, no safety equipment Safety risk
Installation Outside subcontractor, unclear responsibility Unclear who is responsible if something goes wrong

A price difference does not always mean a quality difference, but asking the reason for the difference is the right approach. Surface protection and the load-bearing system in particular are items that are not visible at first glance yet decide the life of the door.

How to weigh the cost of surface protection in İzmir

In İzmir’s humid air, and salty air on the coast, a door with weak surface protection can face renewal costs within a few years. So when looking at the first price, make this comparison:

  • Cheaper system: Low first cost, but maintenance and renewal may be frequent.
  • Galvanising + powder coating (duplex): Higher first cost, less need for maintenance and renewal in the long run.

For surface protection methods and maintenance schedules, see the corrosion and maintenance advice in our Metal Doors in İzmir guide.

8 questions to ask when getting a quote

  1. What are the size, material and sheet/profile thickness?
  2. What are the surface preparation and the paint/galvanising system, and how many coats?
  3. Are posts, foundation, track and hinges included in the quote?
  4. If motorised, are the motor, photocells, safety edge and manual release included?
  5. Who is responsible for the power supply and control?
  6. Are transport, installation and VAT included?
  7. How long is the quote valid?
  8. Who measures and installs, and is maintenance support provided?

What should you send for a first price?

  • Photos: Where the door will go, its surroundings and any existing door
  • Approximate dimensions: Width and height; for a sliding gate, the side clearance
  • Ground condition: Flat or sloping?
  • Type preference: Sliding, swing, louvred, laser-cut; say so if undecided
  • Motor wish: Now or later?
  • Location: District or neighbourhood; closeness to the coast affects the surface protection advice
  • An example you like: A door or reference image from our gallery

With this we can give a first idea; the firm price is set by on-site measurement, once the ground and wall condition have been seen.
